the RV has officially been booked for 7 days from Los Angeles, CA - Mesa, AZ. Stops are expected to include Zion, the Grand Canyon, Vegas, Monument Valley, Sedona and possibly more depending on what we can squeeze in.

Take a look at our darling here. You will also notice that she has 2 double beds! Anyone up for some adventure?

She needs to be christened accordingly. All inappropriate names are much appreciated.

the architecture of happiness

August 5th, 2007

during the year since my mother’s death, I noticed that I’ve been reading much more than usual. Even during my mother’s illness, when I needed to find escape or solace there was always a book nearby.

i haven’t had as much time to read lately, which has been more of a disappointment than i could ever imagine.. in fact, i sometimes have visions of taking a year off of work to travel with Kyriacos–armed only with some choice novels and camping gear. am i crazy to indulges in such fantasies?

in the meantime, the love affair continues. Regardless of a scathing review in the Guardian, I found de Botton’s insights into the reflection of our humanity in architecture intriguing.

“”The failure of architects to create congenial environments mirrors our inability to find happiness in other areas of our lives. Bad architecture is in the end as much a failure of psychology as of design. It is an example expressed through materials of the same tendency which in other domains will lead us to marry the wrong people, choose inappropriate jobs and book unsuccessful holidays: the tendency not to understand who we are and what will satisfy us.”

With next year’s elections looming on the horizon, the CFR (Council of Foreign Relations, aka pimp to Foreign Affairs Magazine) has posted an Issue Tracker that lets you read a candidate’ stand (and in some cases, an artfully crafted piece of bs) on a variety of issues such as keeping out los mexicanos, whether the planet is hot enough yet, and why we need more tainted Chinese toothpaste.

workers of the world on holiday..

May 1st, 2007

FeluccaSail.jpg

Well, it’s May Day here in Russia. A day off from our sweat and toil on behalf of “the man” has been granted.

The hobos have filled up 2 backpacks and leave tonight for a week journey to Egypt. There were 2 options: beach vacation in Sharm el Sheikh or educational/adventure journey.

The beach beckoned us with the allure of relaxing days spent reading on the beach, scubadiving and the partaking of various alcoholic beverages adorned with umbrellas. Coworkers had raved about the fabulous nightlife. But there was some serious guilt. Go to Sharm but skip over the pyramids & the famous nile? Why oh why can’t ignorance ever get the upper hand?

belongings: 2 backpacks. one video camera.
itinerary: Cairo-Aswan-Luxor
method of transport- two feet, camel, train and felucca

the yacoubian building

April 12th, 2007

yacoubian.jpg

If you want to read a fantastic work of modern Egyptian literature, get this title. Ties the social, political and economic conflicts within contemporary Egypt together in dramatic fashion. Storyline akin to an Alejandro Iñárritu film (Crash, Babel).. Coincidentally– it was brought to screen in 2006, although difficult to get on DVD.

The building actually exists, and it located on Talaat Herb. Strangely enough, before I had even read the book we book a hotel for our trip next month to Cairo. The address? Four houses down from the Yacoubian building.. Destiny? Wacky tobacky in the shisha water pipe? You decide.

“The stories of each of the primary characters are often intertwined, at times colliding or converging with one another. Together, they give a biting condemnation of a nation that has squandered its promise and which has been forced to compromise its own principles, resulting in a corrupt and undemocratic political system dominated by a single party (the fictitious “Patriotic Party”, a thinly-veiled version of Egypt’s National Democratic Party), a society whose most talented members abandon the country for promising careers abroad, and an increasingly disenchanted and restive populace that has no loyalty to the government and which sees extremist Islam as one of the few viable options to counter growing poverty, economic stagnation, and a perceived degradation of morals and lack of social cohesion.”- wikipedia
